You Don’t Feel What You Don’t Feel

Miracle Ball Method® Discover Your Body Series

Relieve Your Pain. Reduce Your Stress. Reshape Your Body.

What if the key to changing your body isn’t doing more exercise, but learning how to give your body better directions?

This is the idea behind the Discover Your Body Series.

After years of working with people and observing how differently each person experiences movement, I’ve come to believe that one of the most helpful things you can do for your body is to become curious about it.

Think back to being a child.

Children naturally move. They explore. They experiment. They don’t necessarily worry about whether they are doing a movement the “right” way. They aren’t always comparing themselves to someone else. They discover what their bodies can do by trying things.

Somewhere along the way, many of us lose that curiosity.

We learn how we are supposed to exercise, stretch, sit, stand, and even breathe.

But what if you stopped for a moment and asked:

What do I actually feel of my body?

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

There’s a wonderful expression: “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

It refers to something fundamental about being human. We can’t always understand another person’s experience because we haven’t experienced it ourselves.

We often talk about being “open-minded.” But how open can we really be to an experience for which we have no frame of reference?

I think the same thing happens with our bodies.

With the Miracle Ball Method®, I would say:
You don’t feel what you don’t feel.

This is one of the most important concepts to understand when practicing—or teaching—the Miracle Ball Method.

Your physical experience is uniquely yours.

Two people can do exactly the same movement, in exactly the same position, and experience something completely different.

One person may feel a good tension throughout their body. Another may feel nothing. Someone else may suddenly notice an area of their body they have never really felt before.

None of these experiences is necessarily right or wrong.

They are simply different.

The Miracle Ball Method Is Not Exercise

This is why it is so important to understand that the Miracle Ball Method is not exercise.

The directions are designed to provide an experience of feeling your physical body.

The balls, the positions, the movements, the breathing, and the directions all give you opportunities to notice.

What do you feel?

Can you recognize the difference between good tension and stiffness?

Where do you not feel anything?

Can you feel the difference between one side of your body and the other?

Can you notice how one part of your body affects another?

And perhaps most importantly:
Can you become curious about what your body is telling you?

We are all individuals. Your body will not take you to the wrong place. Yet we often resist being spontaneous because we are afraid of doing something wrong or making pain or injury worse.

We may have mostly the same physical parts, give or take a few, and there are thousands upon thousands of exercises and ways to move.

But every person does those movements through their own physical experience.

That experience matters.

Discover How You Move

As adults, we can become very accustomed to moving in the same ways.

We sit the same way. We stand the same way. We walk the same way. We exercise the same way.

And because those patterns are familiar, we may not even recognize them as patterns.

But when you begin to feel your body differently, something interesting can happen.

You become curious.

And curiosity can create an opening to move differently through your miraculous nervous system—the superhighway of connectivity that works at lightning speed.

Most adults resist this freedom without realizing it. We get stuck in familiar patterns and blame our bodies.

Remember:
Your body is listening to you.

That is the discovery.

The Discover Your Body Series will explore what tension is, how to use key areas of your body, how to move your body as a whole, and why breathing is essential to every part of your physical experience.

Then we put those discoveries into practice through exercises done differently. The intention is to help you relieve chronic pain, reduce stress, reshape your body, and—perhaps most importantly—enjoy everyday movement again.

Exercise Doesn’t Change Your Body. The Way You Do the Exercise Does.

You can do an exercise every day and still be reinforcing the same patterns.

The question isn’t simply:
“What exercise am I doing?”

The more interesting question is:
“How am I doing it?”

Your awareness, your directions, your breathing, your tension, and the way your body participates in the movement all influence your physical experience.

This is why discovering your body can be so powerful.

You aren’t simply asking your body to work harder.

You’re learning how to communicate with it.
