Connection, Not Perfection

Your body is not just a mechanical experience of moving parts separate from who we are — it is who we are.

Most of the way exercise is taught and healing is approached promotes a sense of separation or dominance over the body. Working with your body is much more of a partnership. With the former, you miss what your body can give you. This connection is a personal experience — while still exploring the strength you crave and the movement you love.

Your body is a learning experience. It can teach you. Yet, in the world we live in, our all-powerful ego “knows all.” When we think we already know everything, there is little left to learn. When it comes to the body, this puts us in a very vulnerable place.

There are limited options for the countless physical symptoms people experience. Much chronic pain is the result of high stress and anxiety, long periods of sitting, aging, and injury. Many of us live in constant fear that our symptoms will worsen. Yet we rarely consider that we may be missing the bigger picture of what our body can provide — not only for physical improvement but in ways we can’t yet imagine.

A Story About Connection

I want to tell you a story about a young woman who came to my class recently. She reminded me just how important it is for the Miracle Ball Method to be taught everywhere possible.

She had many problems with her body — chronic stress, pain in her neck, shoulders, lower back, and migraines. She was bright and open to doing the Method. When I began working closely with her, her muscles were fighting everything we did. That’s what she had been taught — the harder you work, the more you control the body, the more relief you’ll get.

It’s a misguided conclusion, but sadly, not many other options are offered.

There is not a mind-body connection in this world, but rather a mind-body disconnection.

As we began to move differently, she suddenly stopped, a blissful look on her face. Her body had stopped fighting. She was allowing a different experience.

It wasn’t simply relaxation or the absence of tension — it was much deeper. When you stop the fight, you feel a new direction emerging. We don’t need to “find” connection; our body already knows what that is. What limits us is not knowing how disconnected we’ve become. That is what prevents the body from giving us the direction and feeling we seek in any endeavor.

So much of her chronic holding prevented her body from functioning without pain. She couldn’t breathe easily — which is very common. In this lies what’s missing: trust. We have lost basic confidence that our body knows how to help us. We just don’t know how to quiet the noise in our heads.

As I guided her, I used certain words so she could feel her fight rather than resist it. Once you experience what your body is doing, it becomes less difficult to let it change. We’ve been told for so long that control is the answer — but we don’t control every aspect of our physical experience.

Weight and Breath

We are connected to a universe where gravity exists, and we must use it to our benefit. Yet most people, in this world of superficiality, fight gravity. We will not win — it’s exhausting. You would never see a small child doing that.

She began to breathe. I asked, “Do you feel it?”
She said, “I feel much more.”

Then she added, “I feel like this is teaching me not just about my body, but about how I live my everyday life.”

That stopped me. I haven’t stopped thinking about it — how profoundly simple it is. How can we overlook such truth in a world where our bodies have become armor against feeling? And yet, when we stop the fight, how beautiful it is to enjoy the body — as that young woman said, and so much more.

There Is No Perfect Way

As we all search for the right exercise, therapy, or teacher, consider this:

There is no one right way to move.
There is no perfect therapy or teacher.

As long as you remain separate from yourself — the unique “you” who is like no one else — nothing will work for long.

Your body isn’t looking for perfection — only connection.
And when that happens, everything begins to work together. It’s not us against them. It’s having both.
