Taking It a Step Further

If you’ve experienced the Miracle Ball Method, you know that understanding the directions is essential. Even the simplest direction — feeling the weight of your body on the ball — begins to create change.

(Excuse my pun!) It gets the ball rolling.

It begins to give your brain a sense of what part of your body you are experiencing on the ball. But let’s take that a step further.

When you begin to acknowledge those parts of your body and notice what they are doing, you may discover something surprising: sometimes it is you who is actually holding those parts.

Many times during classes, I’ll hear students say, “Yes, my shoulder is off the floor,” as they continue sliding off the mat. It’s almost as if we think there is an imaginary person holding our shoulder up or pushing our body away from the ball.

But there isn’t.

It is your own body listening to you — often without you even realizing it.

The Miracle Ball Method has many directions designed to help you feel your physical body. Today, I want to take that awareness one step further and talk about how you use those sensations to create stronger, more connected movement.

Once you begin to experience key areas of your body — your leg joints, your breathing, your backbone, your ribs, and how all your joints connect — begin to take those feelings with you into your everyday life.

Whole Body Moves

Your body is a whole. It is connected.

Every movement you make with one part creates movement throughout your entire body.

It is the current. It is the connection.

You only have two options:

The habits of the past…

or the possibilities of doing it different based on what you feel now.

But you have to be specific.

When you walk, can you feel all parts of your body participating?

After a ball placement, I often encourage students to get up and move right away.

Walk around. Notice. Ask yourself:

Is something different?

Be specific.

Your body does not understand generalities like, “I like this,” or “This hurts.”

Your body understands sensation.

Maybe it is a moment where you think:

“My ribs feel like they moved into a different place.”

“My pelvis feels different. I didn’t even realize I could feel my pelvis while standing.”

“My shoulders feel so far away from my ears.”

“I can actually let myself breathe.”

Notice how often I come back to acknowledging parts of your body.

That back-and-forth communication — your Body Dialogue — is where change begins.

Moving Beyond Relaxation

In the upcoming Summer Workshop Series, each class is 90 minutes. This is where we begin to combine the Miracle Ball Method with traditional movements and exercises — but with a new understanding of how your whole body works together.

When you stretch, strengthen, reach, bend, and move, you no longer leave behind the areas of your body that old habits have disconnected from.

That disconnect can contribute to chronic aches, poor posture, stiffness, and even the feeling of anxiety within your body.

Many people do the right exercises and still experience the same knee, hip, back, or shoulder problems.

Why?

Because it is not only the exercise that changes your body.

It is how you experience your whole body while doing the exercise.

exercising

Your body is talking.

Are you listening?

And just as importantly:

What are you saying back to your body?

Because your body is listening to you.

You begin to engage your entire body in the way it naturally wants to move.

You can continue moving from your history — the way you have always done things.

Or you can begin to experience what you are actually doing and create something different.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Miracle Ball Method is that people think the goal is simply to “relax, release, and let go.”

Of course, you are going to relax.

Of course, your muscles are going to release.

Enjoy that feeling. It is an important part of the process.

It is like taking off a tight bandage and finally allowing yourself to breathe.

But that feeling is also an opportunity.

The real question is:

How do you take that new sensation into your everyday movements?

Walking. Standing. Stretching. Reaching. Bending.

Because those are the movements you do every day.

Many people experience discomfort reaching for something on a high shelf or bending down to pick something up from the floor.

The movement itself is not the problem.

You can do it differently.

Doing It Different

The Saturday Summer Workshop Series gives you the opportunity to take what you experience on the ball and bring it into movement.

These are simple, everyday movements — but done with a sense of equality throughout the body.

And that word matters.

Many people are frustrated with the way they move because they are leaving out key areas of the body that could help movement feel easier and more natural.

Join me beginning July 11 for the Saturday Workshop Series.

Most importantly, remember:

You are moving every day.

Enjoy your body!

And if you are not, become more specific.

When you are on the ball…
When you are breathing…
When you are exploring different ball placements…

Ask yourself:

How does that part of your body really feel?

This is not work.

It is observation.

It is as simple as looking out your window and noticing the scenery. You don’t have to force yourself to see it — but you might miss something if you never open your eyes.

With the Miracle Ball Method, I’m asking you to open your mind and your body.

Last week’s blog was about listening to your body.

But the other side of that is this:

Your body is listening to you.

When you give your body new sensations and then put those sensations into action as you move every day, you create a new way of experiencing movement — without the pain, without the anxiety, and without the fear.

You get to enjoy moving your body again.
